Welcome to VCE

Years 11 and 12 are pivotal years in a student's academic journey. Our passionate teachers provide guidance and support within a nurturing environment to help students achieve their goals

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)

VCE is the certificate awarded to students at our School upon the successful completion of their secondary education. The VCE provides diverse pathways to further study or training at university, TAFE, and employment.

In VCE, each subject is divided into four units, numbered Unit 1, 2, 3, and 4.

  • Units 1 and 2 are typically undertaken in Year 11, while
  • Units 3 and 4 are usually completed in Year 12.

How do I choose my subjects?

We believe the best approach to subject selection considers individual interests, abilities, and careful planning. We recommend that students keep the following in mind:

  • Choose subjects that align with your strengths and passions, as this will help you stay motivated and learn effectively.
  • In Years 11 and 12, select subjects that are prerequisites for your chosen field of study or career. We encourage you to consult the Head of Careers and Enterprise for guidance.

Subject Selection

  • Some subjects are required to be undertaken as a Unit 1 - 4 sequence
  • Some subjects are recommended to be undertaken as a Unit 1 - 4 sequence
  • Some subjects can be undertaken as either Unit 1, Unit 2 (or both) or 3 - 4 sequences
  • At Mentone Girls’ Grammar, students generally complete their VCE with 22 units
  • VCE subjects follow a sequence of four units.
    • Typically, 12 units are studied in Year 11 (usually these are Units 1 & 2); and
    • 10 units are studied in Year 12 (usually Units 3 & 4). Units 3 & 4 MUST be taken as a sequence.

Accelerated VCE (Year 11)

  • Accelerated VCE enables students to have a sixth subject which will contribute towards their ATAR. Students who possess an academic achievement of B+ (75%) or above overall, have an exemplary attendance record and have demonstrated mature work habits are able to apply for this pathway.
  • Students undertaking a Units 3 & 4 sequence of a subject in Year 11 must have successfully completed an Accelerated VCE Subject in Year 10.

Extra-Curricular

As a Year 11 or 12 student, the final years are a time for growth and discovery. Extra-Curricular activities offer more than just fun; they shape students into a well-rounded individual and promote wellbeing. Students can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh's Award, aerobics, debating, School Production, other forms of social service, various Performing Arts groups House activities and Girls’ Sports Victoria sporting teams.
